New SEO Formula

The New SEO Formula

Posted by | Online Marketing, Organic Search | No Comments

I’ve been reading more and more lately about a new formula for SEO (organic search engine optimization) and how it has changed from before, where it used to be calculated based on the number of external links, the use of social media, keywords embedded in all of your content, and how often you publish. The most recent update implies that only the use of great content (relavant content) really drives organic SEO, and all of the other aspects don’t weight as heavily any more. This is exactly right, but this has always been the case.

For years I’ve been teaching clients the importance of content, the roll it plays in your online marketing efforts, and how it can truly be your most important marketing vehicle. The best way for me to explain SEO, and how it relates to your organic ranking on Google is to think of your website as a knowledge base for the type of content you publish. Google is a business, and they want to ensure that everyone who performs a search is presented with the best possible match.

If you think of your website as a knowledge base, you can start to understand why you might rank better for one specific keyword phrase, based on the amount of content you have provided about that term. The more “relavant” content you have on your website, the frequency of your publishing schedule, and how well your content is shared will determine how well you rank organically.

The most common red flag I encounter, is when someone says: “I don’t have enough to write about.” At first glance you might be right, but if you have ever been asked a question by a customer about your service, you have a blog post to write (answer the question). Look over your past 50 customer service requests, identify if your website answers those inquires, and if they don’t, write about them.

5 reasons why you should complete your LinkedIn profile

Posted by | Online Marketing | No Comments

Ever wonder why LinkedIn asks you to fill out your online profile so often? Or why they have included a profile progress indication bar? They have built their networking tools in such a way that if you do not fill out your profile completely, they will rank your profile lower when displaying search results on a people search when looking for professions in a specific industry. You may think this is that important, but when you start looking for jobs on LinkedIn they also prioritize your profile among other candidates based on how complete your profile is.

Here are 5 reasons why you should finish your LinkedIn profile:

  1. You will be ranked higher on LinkedIn’s search results when someone is looking to find a professional with your experience;
  2. your profile will be indexed into Google search results when someone searches your name;
  3. employers will see that you take your professional career seriously, and will be able to learn more about what you have to offer;
  4. if you are seeking a new job, your complete profile will better recommend jobs based on your past experience;
  5. if you have applied to positions using LinkedIn’s job search, employees will be able to see your recommendations and get a good sense of your professional background.
If you are looking to grow your professional network, or trying to find a new job on LinkedIn, it’s a good idea to finish your profile. It only takes 15 to 25 minutes to do one profile from start to finish. Take the time.

Have you been looking at your landing pages?

Posted by | Analytics, Online Marketing, Web Design | No Comments

Do you monitor your top landing pages? These are the pages that visitors land on when first arriving at your website, and typically they are the primary pages on your website (for example, my top landing pages are; homepage, experience, portfolio, blog, and some of my individual blog posts.)

Where do I find my top landing pages? If you are using Google Analytics, you can simply go to the “content” section, and select “landing pages”, from there you will see the top ten landing pages on your website. With this information you can start to think about a few action plans. One, if you notice that your top landing pages are not properly setup for site conversion, you can start looking at redesigning each page individually. Two, you can look at the “source” of traffic to all of these pages, and determine how you can nurture the relationship with those websites that are sending all of the traffic.

What else can I do to improve performance of my top landing pages? Start to track what your visitors are doing on these landing pages, and if you can, implement a tool to run A/B testing so that you can learn how to improve conversion rates on those pages. With A/B testing, you can try things like; moving your call-to-actions around the pages, add or remove content, change design elements, and test different wording to see what drives more page interaction.

If you want to use a simple, inexpensive tool to implement A/B testing, try using Optimizely. You will find this tool very easy to integrate on your website, and you do not need to be a professional website designer to use it. Give it a try!

Why I stopped reading my Groupon emails

Posted by | Online Marketing | No Comments

Since Groupon launched in 2008, they have been growing at an incredible rate, and have had many companies try to copy their business model (also known as “Living Social”). The idea is simple; collect a large base of customers looking for deals (pretty much everyone), and have a business offer products or services at a considerable discount. These discounts have ranged from 20% to 94%, depending on the original cost of goods. At first, this type of site was totally unique, and to get those types of discounts we would have to wait until Boxing Day or Black Friday.

The idea of daily deals is everywhere now, but what I fear is that it’s creating the mindset that if you wait long enough, any product/service will go on sale. Having this type of customer cuts your regular retail sales, and deters customers from buying products at reasonable prices. For most businesses, they have not taken the approach that they need to blast a massive discount in order to generate new business. It’s one thing to offer promotional pricing once and a while, and another to diminish your service by offering it at a reduced rate. There are a few ways to look at the side effects of jumping on the Groupon bandwagon; on the plus side you generate tons of instant sales, you might reach a new source of customers, and you can guarantee business by a specific date (Any deal must be used by a certain time). Now on the down side, you have reduced the value of your service (customers now know what you can offer your product/service at), you develop a different type of customer (customers that only shop deals, not loyal long standing customers), and the next time you offer the same discount your success rate will be reduced.

Since 2008, I have viewed over 4,000 emails, and have only purchased one daily deal. If I am not interested in hot yoga, spas, laser hair removal, or $20 of food for $10, then I could easily unsubscribe from all of these services. To me, Groupon has lost its niche advantage over the other online deal websites. If you open any daily deal site today, you will see all of the same services that were once exclusive to Groupon.

If Groupon wants to continue to be successful, they need to start thinking about the next big “thing” (different products/services, or something else all together).

I’ve been trying to use Google+

Posted by | Online Marketing, Social Media | No Comments

For the past two months, I have been asked weekly if I am using Google+, and I am not really sure how to respond. Do I have an account? Yes. Have you ever posted to your profile? Yes. Do you know what you are doing, and why? Not really. I have been trying to figure out why I should integrate Google+ into my social media plan, and if there is an easy way to start publishing content that wouldn’t interfere with my current workflow.

After a few weeks of research, I am now ready to start publishing content to my Google+ account. For the record, Google+ tends to be more of a content push, rather than a social conversation. Also, if you are looking to create more awareness for your company brand, Google has just started offering promoted pages (pretty much the same thing as a Facebook Fan page, but less cool). Promoted pages seem to be their attempt at competing with Facebook Fan pages, but out of the gate they are missing a lot of core functionality.

If you are looking to jump on the Google+ bandwagon, now is probably a great time to setup your account and start finding some connections (people to follow). All you need is a Google account, and about 25 minutes of free time to setup your profile correctly. Sign up, setup your basic information, and start sharing content with your friends and family.

Grow your brand locally with Google Places

Posted by | Branding, Online Marketing, Organic Search | No Comments

Have you already created a local listing for your business, or are you still unsure of the benefits? As most of you have started noticing over the past few years, Google has been getting smarter when visitors are searching for specific topics. If you are located in Canada for example, there is a good chance you have already been defaulted to the Canadian version of Google’s search results. Also, when searching for topics such as restaurants, hair salons, bike shops, clothing stores, and other services that are required to be local, they have started bringing local businesses to the top of the organic search results. This is a great addition to the way people search the Internet, and also allows for local brands to get better brand placement.

Google offers a free service called “Google Places“, with this service you can add your business to the local listing of providers who also offer similar services. If done correctly, business owners can reach new customers in their local area more effectively, and it also allows the customers to write reviews on each business they have been to. If you have not already written a review for a business that you have recently been to, I would highly recommend taking a few minutes to tell other people what your experience was like with the business.

If you are a business owner, and would like to start growing your business locally, go online and start creating your profile today.

Looking for a domain name?

Posted by | Business Development, Online Marketing | No Comments

Are you looking to buy your first domain name, and not sure who to use? Buying a domain name and email address (Getting an email address @yourdomain.com) for the first time can be an extremely confusing process. You will come across many websites that seem to offer the best prices, and exactly what you are looking for. Doing a domain name search is probably the easiest part of this project. Finding a domain registrar that lets you buy and manage your domains without being bombarded with upsell is another thing.

Since 2003, I have been managing all of my domains with 1and1, and for the most part it was the best solution; until I needed support. If you own a domain name, and manage a website or mailbox at that domain name, you now know the importance of getting quality support the second you need it.

After searching for a new registrar for a few weeks I came across a company called “Hover”, and from all of the positive comments and feedback they had on Twitter, I figured it was worth a shot. Meanwhile, I was looking for a new full-time position, and after doing more research about Hover I found out that they were based here in Toronto. Needless to say, I now work for Hover.com as the Marketing Manager, and I have successfully moved all of my domain names (around 45) to Hover.com.

Here is why I moved my domain names to Hover:

  • Competitive prices (whois privacy is included with all domain names).
  • Hands down the best customer service team I have called… Ever! (Actually, for any service).
  • Valet transfer service – they will take the pain out of transferring your domain names from any registrar.
  • Control panel – If you love Apple design and easy-to-use interfaces, Hover is the best place to manage your domain names.

Check out what they have to offer at www.hover.com or see what people are saying about them on Twitter.

Why I decided to consolidate my websites

Posted by | Online Marketing | No Comments

Over the past 5 years I have been managing my own small online consulting company here in Toronto, Ontario. During those years, I have been operating my business under the company name “96robots“, and managing a few freelance web developers on some of myScreen Shot 2011 11 22 at 8.05.31 PM Why I decided to consolidate my websites design work. Services I offer include: website design, online marketing planning, email marketing, user experience training, social media awareness and building, and how to effectively leverage your brand online.

Meanwhile, I’ve always run a portfolio site for my personal brand at SeanHurley.ca, and used it to promote my career experience over the years. Since graduating, I have had the opportunity to work with some really great Canadian brands like Umbra Ltd. and Hover.com. 96robots has always been completely transparent to my day job, and I continue to work on consulting projects as a way to help other businesses grow their brands online. It has enabled me to learn about a variety of industries such as Architecture, Financial Services, Blogging, Industrial Hardware, Consumer Goods, and some great local personal services.

After looking at both websites, I realized that when I speak to customers they don’t think of me as “96robots” or remember my company name; they remember “Sean Hurley.” I decided it made more sense for me to consolidate both websites and highlight my consulting work and job experience on the same site.

It has taken me almost 3 weeks to bring over all of the content from 96robots.com and seanhurley.ca, and go through every blog post to make sure the content that was published over 5 years ago still relates to the present. Now, when you land on my website you will see both the job experience I have, the services I offer, and a portfolio of my consulting work.

I hope you like it!

How I approached online personal branding

Posted by | Branding, Online Marketing | No Comments

Over the past 2 months I have purchased the following domain names to help improve my online awareness. The thought behind the purchases was not to just claim all of these domains so that others couldn’t use, but with the thought of developing individual website on each.

seanhurley.com
seanhurley.org
seanhurley.co
seanhurley.me

With any topic the more valuable content you can offer the better your search results (Google Organic Results) you will be. Try picking up your name first and build a portfolio site / blog where you can use it as an outlet for your content.
